For months now all I have been hearing about is how bad our economy is. I'm worried. Extremely worried. I work at a restaurant and so our source of income is based on how well the restaurant is doing; meaning how many customers we're getting.
Because our economy is failing people aren't going out of their way to spend money at a restaurant. Going out to eat is not something people have to do. I am not secure at this job.
I realized this when they begin doing budget cuts. It was extremely easy to get overtime. No one cared if you stayed later; they didn't watch over your shoulder.
Now it's another story. My sister who has been working there for almost 3 years said that it changed. Before it was a light hearted place with easy going people. She is the first person I've heard say that they like their job.
Now not so much. Ever since the budget cut, no one is allow to get overtime. Every mistake that you commit you're getting written up. Before they didn't take their write ups seriously but now they're firing people left and right.
This past saturday one of the hostess got fired for being late. Before it was tolerated; not so much anymore. They let her work her shift and after it was over they fired her. The owner was really upset for some reason saturday night, threaten to fire just about everyone.
Many guys who worked in the kitchen has gotten fired. Two servers who has been working there for years were let go as well.
My sister who is a server called me about an hour ago, clearly upset about the news she just received. They are no longer letting anyone do doubles anymore. For those of you who aren't sure what doubles are is when you work two shifts. She's extremely mad because saturday was her only day to work. She is in school full time, has a daughter to provide for and pay bills on top of that. Yes her boyfriend helps but she is the type of young lady who isn't comfortable with letting someone do everything.
At the job everyone is tense. The atmosphere is not an happy one. It's slower. He's not making as much money as he use to and for that everyone is going to suffer.
Now I'm just wondering when are they going to let me go. I'm not out on the floor like the servers, hostesses and whatnot. I work in an office. I'm an office assistant. But still what if he realize that he doesn't need me at all? Since it has been slower these days the catering manager hasn't had much to do, what if he decides that the catering manager can take care of it?
I'm fucked! I'm making good money for an 19 year old who still lives at home with her mother. They recently gave me a raise and I haven't been there for a year yet (it'll be 6 months the 28th) but still at this point everyone is at risk.
I should probably start looking for a new job? But what would I do? Go back to the supermarket? People need supermarkets...that's where they buy their food from. But hell no, they pay you little to nothing!
Before I wasn't too concern with the pay but once you get it, you don't want it to be taken away from you. You want more.
I'm so sick of hearing about how bad our economy is. It brings your spirits down. I go into work every single day trying my hardest to listen to good news. I'm let down every single time. Every news channel has something negative to say. I need answers! Relief. Security. Something!
