I was caught up in the moment when I did last night post. 5 minutes within announcing that Barack Obama has won, the first thing I did was sign onto facebook, myspace and of course this blog. Last night was a huge ordeal for our country and the fact that other countries seem to realize this as well means a lot. They too knew that we needed this. We needed change, badly. I was watching CNN this morning and a guy said he received a text message from a young man who lives in Afghanistan. The young man was ecstatic about electing Barack Obama as our president. They feel safe. Instead of going to war every time the United States and other countries don't agree on certain things, Obama seems to be a lot more level headed and is willing to negotiate whatever it is at hand. No one likes war. It ruins lives. I'm not saying I'm against war because at times there is a point when talking is not enough but before going to extreme measures and putting our whole country at risk, try to find ways to avoid war. How many times have we been faced with a conflict and was ready to fight but parents would always tell us to just turn the other cheek and walk away even though you didn't want to because it would make you seem scared? But you did and the outcome was worth it. You won't get into trouble, you won't turn something into a bigger deal. You may even sit down with the person and work out your differences. Talking does help, listening plays a big part in situations too.
As far as what stuck out to me was that all through this election a lot of people were saying due to Obama's race it was going to cost him the election. But it didn't. Yes, we still have a problem with racism in our country but the fact that the American people were more concern about age in this election than race really spoke out to me. It spoke to me because I am sick and tired of people negative thoughts of other people race. It's time to realize that people of a different race is not always out to get you. It does happen, I've experienced this personally. A couple of months ago I was insulted because I was black by a Latino female. Clearly upset, I was ready to bite her head off but once the rage has cease and started thinking clearly I know that every Latino person is not like that. Her views about my race was not going to effect the one that I think about hers.
At this moment I wished I owned a video camera because last night was a truly amazing feeling. A lot of people at my job was excited to vote. You would think that voting was a trend that was in and everyone was excited about following this new trend. There were people on the bus and on trains with smiles upon their faces eager to see the outcome of this election. When I got home to vote yesterday a man and woman were upset because they were being sent different places to cast their votes; they never gave up. Instead they stood there, fighting about casting their votes. Wanting their voice to be heard. Young people, first time voters like myself thought this was the coolest thing ever. It felt like Christmas eve. Waiting and anticipating the results. Did our vote count? And once we got our answers, you heard screaming from outside. Chants and cheering; that Barack Obama was indeed our new president. If I could have had a camera at that time, catching those moments it would had been a great feeling. But unfortunately I didn't have a camera, all I have are these memories. The American people spoke, the young voters came out on top and we elected Barack Obama to be our president.
To each and every person at there who did vote for this incredible person it means different thing. I can't speak for all but I can speak for myself. I can tell you once they said Obama was president it felt like my whole body was on fire. I was ready to do just about any and everything. No one thought that a black man would had made it into office but he did and this gave me nothing but hope. My new attitude is that if Barack Obama can become president of the united states then I can be whatever I want to be. There are no more excuses. Remember when your parents and teachers use to both say you can become anything if you put your mind to it. Barack Obama is living proof of that. There are absolutely no more excuses for black people especially. Barack Obama started it and now we have to finish it. We can take this country by storm. I'm not saying it's going to be an easy task to accomplish but if you're focus and consistent then anything and everything is possible. Like Obama said last night in his speech "If there is anyone out there that still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founder is alive in our time. That still questions the power in our democracy. Tonight is your answer."
We voted and we voted for change. We voted for Barack Obama. He has a lot on his shoulders, being the first african american president but he also has a lot of prayers behind him too. I have faith that he will do a very good job in office and I'm positive I am not the only one.
